Testimonials offered by a few of Adam’s clients and colleagues:
"Adam Miller's work is distinguished by its breathtaking beauty and perfect joinery, in both classical and contemporary timber styles. Adam is undoubtedly one of the most efficient and productive craftsmen I have had the pleasure of working with, and I recommend him without reservation for any project worthy of his skills.”
-Ray Clark, Lyme, New Hampshire
“I have worked in American timber framing since the late ‘70s, and have known a great many talented and dedicated craftsmen. Even in that impressive group, Adam stands out – for his quiet passion for the work, his dedication to learning, and his exceptional willingness to share and spread the remarkable amount he has learned. Adam practices, teaches, and writes of timber framing at the highest levels.”
-Ben Brungraber, Ph.D., P.E., Fire Tower Engineered Timber
"I hired Adam to raise a timber frame barn that he had designed and cut. I couldn’t be happier with the end result. I regularly pretend to be a carpenter on the weekends, so naturally I volunteered to be his apprentice. I learned a lot working with Adam, as he is a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of timber framing. Every single step of the barn raising was a learning experience and it comes natural for Adam to go into technical explanations which I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated."

When the opportunity arose to work on a unique and challenging project with round bark-on locust logs, we knew we had to consider the unknowns and ask ourselves tough questions about our in-house capabilities. This process, which we call a pre-mortem, led us to the second crucial step: knowing who to call. In this case, the choice was clear—Adam Miller. We convinced him to join us in North Carolina for several weeks to figure out how to not only scribe and join irregular locust logs with engineered mortise and tenon joinery (and some hidden steel) but also to do so while keeping the bark intact. To add to the challenge, we asked him to teach our team enough so they could complete the project after his departure. Reflecting on the experience, did we call the right expert? Absolutely.

Thank you again for the amazing experience down in Canelo. I am full of gratitude for all the things I learned from you. It was an amazing experience and I think will change the course of my work future substantially. I wanted to share a picture of your ideas that I put into the shala model yesterday. Maybe in a year and a half we can hire you to run a workshop and show us and more students how to put the wild central pole into multiple assemblies. Thank you for sharing you wealth of knowledge it was amazing to meet you!

The Bamfield build was special for many reasons. I’ve had time to reflect on that experience and it sure was profound. Profound for many reasons—working with old growth cedar is so rare these days, and seeing it put to use in a community hall is an incredible use of that material. The fact that I got to spend near two weeks learning from you was so cool. Working alongside you, working through your method on a relatively challenging build, was an experience I will remember for a long, long time. That might have been the spark I needed to start committing myself to the building arts. You’ve helped inspire the confidence in me that I CAN do this, and that the people that I keep bumping into along the way is what is making this transition from ecologist/forester to builder reassuring. I intend on bridging all my experience into future builds.
